We’ve all procrastinated and found out later the hard way that if we had taken action we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble. In the case of drains this can end up costing you more in repairs and causing more headaches. It is important to take action when your drain is showing signs that it’s not working properly. If you seem to have slow moving drains in only one area such as the bathroom sink it is probably only that line that is clogged. If there are multiple drains moving slow it is likely the main line is the issue.
Drains commonly become clogged because all sorts of things go down drains that aren’t meant to. When your drains are moving slow this is a sign that you have a clog starting and if you wait it will only grow and eventually become completely backed up. This can lead to “black water”, dirty waste water contaminating and causing damage to your house. To prevent this contact a professional at the first signs of a clog.
Other signs things aren’t flowing as they should are foul smells (commonly the first sign), water backs up in other fixtures when water is being used in another area and gurgling sounds. Once again do NOT use chemical drain cleaners to attempt to clear the clog yourself, reasons why can be found in my post about chemical drain cleaners.
These same signs can occur when you have a deviated pipe, an area broken by roots, or a clog way down the pipe. This is why I can’t stress enough why it’s so important to have a professional diagnose the exact issue and not attempt to figure it out on your own. Professionals have equipment that can safely determine the cause of the clog and the machines to unclog pipes without causing damage to the system.
